The Vampire Diaries: 2.12 “The Descent”

Hey, look. It’s a shirtless Stefan. Hi there, shirtless Stefan!

You know, Stefan is really just not nearly as attractive as his brother, Damon. There is just no getting around that.

Speaking of everybody’s favorite vampire-without-a soul, Damon is appearing dangerously close to experiencing – gasp – actual human feelings. Read the rest of this entry »

Oh yeah. I’m also still watching The Vampire Diaries

Hey guys, I realize my posts have been a bit sparse the past week or so. In my defense, finals week (and the week before finals week) really leave very little time for anything other than studying.

But all those essays and exams are now officially behind me, so I should have plenty of time to get all obsessive about TV again.

Now where was I? Oh, right.

So much has happened in the episodes since I last blogged about The Vampire Diaries. Where do I even begin? Read the rest of this entry »

The Vampire Diaries: Masquerade

Tonight on The Vampire Diaries, the ever-brooding and perfectly-coiffed vampire Salvatore brothers have become bound and determined to kill their scheming vampire ex-girlfriend, Katherine.

Except, Damon and Stefan Salvatore have talked about killing Katherine pretty much ever since she came back to town at the end of last season … and neither of them have actually done it yet.

Let’s face it, they are both still in love with her. There will be no Katherine-killing going down tonight. Read the rest of this entry »

I spent my weekend studying. Well, mostly.

Hello, blog-reading world:

You may have noticed that I didn’t post on BethTalksTV at all this weekend. (Or maybe you didn’t notice, but I certainly did. I almost always blog once or twice over the weekend, so to go without doing that felt really weird.)

Alas, when you are in college, you have these things called MIDTERMS that can often get in the way of TV blogging or other potential weekend activities you’re not paying $30K a year for the pleasure of participating in.

So school came before blogging this weekend. Normally I can manage both, but not with midterms. Sigh. Read the rest of this entry »

Favorite Werewolves

It wouldn’t be fair for me to list my top favorite TV vampires without also making note of the other side of the current pop culture mythological creature trend.

They’re hot-blooded, hot-tempered … and seem to have a penchant for running around shirtless.

For every Team Edward fan out there, you will easily find an equally-enthusiastic Team Jacob fan waiting to extoll the virtues of fur over fangs. Consequently, I am pleased to present: BethTalksTV’s favorite werewolves in pop culture.

1. Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), The Twilight Saga. He’s not a TV werewolf, I know, but there’s a relative scarcity of wolves in our current TV market, so I’m going to have to cast the net a bit wider than I did for my vampire list.

I note earlier that I can’t stand Edward Cullen, so Jacob is definitely the one redeeming part of the Twilight saga for me.

He’s hopelessly devoted to Bella with a puppylike sincerity that I find adorable. He’s also not tempted to rip out her jugular every time he’s near her … which in my mind makes Jacob the safer boyfriend choice, as well.

Obviously Bella doesn’t quite feel this way, but whatever. Maybe super-ripped, motorcycle-driving wolfboys are too good for her, anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

Favorite TV Vampires

I like vampire shows. If you’ve read my blog before, perhaps you’ve noticed.

I know it’s a weird thing to like, but at least the pop culture prevalence of the Twilight movies or shows like True Blood and The Vampire Diaries have made my fondness for the genre seem not quite as strange.

Below is a list I compiled of BethTalksTV’s favorite vampires of all time, though I am totally open to feedback and ideas in the comments.

1. Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin), Moonlight. If you’ve read previous vampire posts or any of my Hawaii Five-O coverage, this should come as no surprise. The main reason I care about vampire TV at all is because of Moonlight. The show was a ratings bomb that aired on CBS for only one season in 2007, but I mourned its passing immensly.

Aussie actor O’Loughlin has gone on to play a leading role in CBS’ Hawaii Five-O reboot, but I still prefer his days as the moralistic vampire hottie Mick – a good-hearted private investigator who only drank blood from bloodbanks and longed for the good old days when he still had a pulse.

O’Loughlin as Mick was really good-looking, but not in the cookie-cutter Hollywood sort of way he is now. He has abs, but they weren’t crazily perfectly chiseled like McGarrett’s are. He was tough, but had a kinder side. And better hair.

No offense, Alex, but as great as you are in Hawaii Five-O, I like your 2007 counterpart better. / CC BY 2.02. Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), The Vampire Diaries. Much more interesting than the show’s main character (his younger brother, Stefan), Damon is definintely the best thing about The Vampire Diaries. Yeah he’s evil, kills people, and has absolutely no moral compass … but Damon is so funny – (and good looking)! So it’s okay?

Seriously, though, if you’ve ever seen this show, you will know that Damon’s sarcastic and witty little one-liners are some of the greatest quotes to come out of these episodes.

“Guess I could seduce her the old fashion way. Or I could just… eat her.” Read the rest of this entry »

TVD: Ep. 3 “Bad Moon Rising”

Season 2, episode 3 of The Vampire Diaries, as promised.

I said earlier that I wanted the evil vampire/Elena look-alike Katherine to be in this episode. And she was. For like 3 seconds at the end. (But that’s okay, because it means she will totally be in next week’s episode.)

This week had some very cute Stefan/Caroline scenes – with him acting all big brothery and teaching her how to  be a good vampire (don’t attack people, only feed on cute bunnies and other furry woodland creatures, and the like). Read the rest of this entry »
